James is a fantastic teacher! He is very laid back and welcoming. He also has the ability to really dial in the student and teach off their personality and ability level. My son (under 10 years old) just started out and within a few weeks was doing rock beats learning to read music and keeping rhythm. Anyone who has very young children knows of the attention spans and James does a tremendous job of engaging their million questions or topics that young kids talk about, yet he still can manage to steer them back into their lesson. I would highly recommend him and the Drum Academy to ANYONE wishing to learn drums. You will not be disappointed!

My 12-year-old son started taking lessons with James a few months ago and has made great progress. Despite having ADHD, he was reading music by his second lesson. I highly recommend James, especially if you have kids who want to learn. Although I had drum teachers closer to home, I chose to drive an hour each way based on the reviews I read here. Unfortunately, I've recently moved too far away to continue, but I wanted to leave this well-deserved review. As a former bass player and musician, I can attest that James is a fantastic drummer and a genuinely nice guy.

James is a wonderful drum instructor! He has helped our 3 year old daughter establish a foundation in music, and was patient enough to teach someone that young in a meaningful way. James made drumming simple enough for her to understand while keeping it entertaining so that she wouldn't lose focus and was always very excited to go to lessons. She has shown greater interest in music, improvement in taking direction from others, and come to generally understand that practice helps you improve your skills. While we have to move out of state, I know these lessons gave her an unparalleled experience. Thank you, James!

My son has been coming to James for over a year now and it’s incredible how much he has learned. His lessons are always so much fun to watch and listen to. James is so patient and encouraging. We moved up from a half hour to an hour and it was so beneficial, he made so much progress. Definitely worthwhile to come to The Drum Academy for lessons!!!

My son has been taking lessons with James for over a year and he absolutely loves his teaching style and his time there. James does a great time connecting to him and balancing both technique, with things he's really passionate about, like learning to play along to some of his favorite rock songs. This keeps my son engaged and excited about his lessons, while also teaching him a variety of skills. James has also always been very accommodating if we need to change lesson times. I highly recommend the Drum Academy!

I’ve been taking drum lessons with James for over a year now. I had zero prior experience and was nervous to start something new like this as an adult in my 30’s. However, James makes learning to play drums fun and I’ve been loving it! You are never too old and I’m so glad I gave it a try. James even helped me buy a drum set. Highly recommend taking drum lessons with James. You won’t regret it and you’ll have a blast!!!

Our 11 yo has been taking lessons at the Drum Academy for a few months. He loves it and has learned a great deal. He was a beginner when he started but James is great with kids. He makes it fun and teaches in a way that is easy to follow. Highly recommend.

James from The Drum Academy has been a godsend to our family. As a mother of a video game obsessed 10 year old, I was desperate to find an activity that would get him interested in something other than his games. Drums came at the suggestion of one of his teachers. I researched a few local places and decided to give The Drum Academy a shot. We're so thankful we did. After the first lesson we knew it was going to be a great thing in our lives. Our son loved it and I think a lot has to do with how comfortable James made him from the first lesson on. He is kind, patient, and knows how to talk to kids. James encourages his students and builds up their confidence. Our son looks forward to his weekly lessons with James and always comes out with a big smile on his face. James has a well rounded knowledge of his instrument and will help you find the right instruments when you're ready to purchase a kit. James is easy to work and communicate with and the studio location is convenient and comfortable for a parent to wait during the lesson. Bonus: sometimes James will lay down some pretty amazing beats to demonstrate a technique. James has a passion for music and, more importantly, a passion for teaching. Give this place a try, you won't regret it!
